January / February 2003...
“HUMPTY DUMPTY RIDES AGAIN!”

It’s a serious case of “never say never again” as I’m here to announce the largely unplanned, unexpected and wildly exciting, for me at least, return of myself to The Walls!

Having spent a very pleasant couple of years shuffling around in the rarefied world of property letting and cottage rentals, as most of you know, I was persuaded to take leave of my senses and go LOCO. Re-entering the world of catering confirmed the suspicions of both Kate and I, that I had missed the daily adrenalin rush of constant crisis management that is an integral part of the hospitality industry. God knows why! Suffice to say that I am proud of my involvement in Loco and I wish the venture every success in the future.

Too much of my heart, head and original thought had been invested in The Walls, so that once I’d left Loco a return to my restaurant roots seemed the most logical avenue to pursue. I am delighted to be involved again in running this unique and very special venue. The current owners and I are working very closely from here on to restore and increase the popularity of The Walls.
So, what is this revelation going to mean for you poor, confused supporters of The Walls? Initially, and most importantly, it will bring a much-needed period of my brand of stability.

And, once I’ve remembered where all the light switches are and found the volume knob for the music system, my team will start to re-invent some of the things that made The Walls famous in the first place.
  • The magnificent Sunday lunches
  • The adventurous and exceptional value wine list with loads of wines available by the glass.
  • Daily specials of fish that have just wriggled out of the back of the delivery van
  • Whole cheeses displayed on the cheese table
  • The return of some of the old favourites such as toasted goats cheese and chicken liver & bacon salad
  • The very special music events
  • Regular editions of this newsletter
Above all else it must once again be fun for you to visit us and even if it takes us a little while to get everything right you can be sure that we are all working especially hard to get there.
Taste of Jazz Club

We are thrilled to announce that we have secured a regular Jazz Club to hold monthly sessions at The Walls. The Taste of Jazz Club has been meeting regularly for the last year and has well over one hundred members.

On the last Friday of every month between four and eight musicians built around the J J Jazz Group with guests will perform from 8 till 11 pm.

Entrance is £3.00 per person and a seriously good value, wholesome supper dish will be available at £6,50. For further details contact Malcolm Johnson:

VALENTINE'S NIGHT
FRIDAY THE FOURTEENTH

The older you get the more important it becomes to hang on grimly to every little last vestige of romance that your rapidly ageing and increasingly cynical bones can muster. I am of course talking from a purely personal perspective!

Anyway for the love-struck, the achingly head-over-heels and others seeking to get themselves out of the doghouse and score some much needed brownie points with their significant other, we are hosting an incredibly romantic dinner dance evening.

Our chef, James, has delved deep in his best aphrodisiac cook book and produced, with a little help from the cheesiest recesses of my imagination, a tongue in cheek (What kind of position is that?) menu.

Local band Sixties Twist are going to make sure you are able to smooch your way through the evening before whisking your sweetheart home for what should be a night of unbridled passion - at least for those of you that don’t own a horse!

The price for the evening is £22.50 inclusive.

“STRANGER BY THE MINUTE”

In the light of the shock news that I’m back there could be no more applicable name for the next high profile act to play at The Walls. Stranger by the Minute have performed to rapturous acclaim several times here.

The band comprises 3 members of rock legends Marillion ably supported/augmented by half of Oswestry’s finest and most famous band, Total Chaos. Vocalist Paul assists Phil Beaumont, Shropshire’s leading rock impresario and closet drummer.

The pedigree of the performers is assured and those of you lucky enough to get tickets will have a splendid time.

The performance is on the 15th of February and the tickets priced at £30.00 include a 3-course dinner and coffee. Tickets/reservations can be made either through us of through Forge Studios.

A NEW – OLD PLACE FOR
MORNING COFFEE

In fact, more of an all-day coffee experience....

From Monday 27th January The Walls opens from 10 o’clock for morning coffee and will remain open all day!

Warm welcome guaranteed, we might even add the odd bit of home baking. We have the sensational Illy coffee and make really good cappuccino, espresso etc..

WINE FEST

The ‘gloriously’ chequered recent history of The Walls has presented you and I with a rare educational opportunity to sample a pretty impressive range of some 800 bin end bottles of rag-tag and bobtail, left over from the various wine lists that have operated here since 1999.

For ease of comprehension these wines are offered on a price banded lucky dip basis. I can advise on all of them.

They are mostly whites and will range from £10 in £5 increments up to £30 a bottle and I can promise some really spectacular finds are to be had.

THE TEN POUNDS FOR TWO COURSES PROMOTION

This commercial insanity must end soon! Our wildly talented brigade of chefs can no longer spend their nights off rooting around for truffles in the hills above Selattyn for extra special ingredients to add even more value to this exceptional offer.

So, only until the end of February, on any night apart from Saturday, will you be able to enjoy such quality for such a meagre sum.

We also have a spectacularly generous wine offer which provides you with a voucher for a free bottle of wine on your next visit, provided you spend £20.00 on food. I know you’ve all heard this before but these offers really can’t last.

LUNCHTIME

You are probably really confused about our menus and the style of food we provide. The last two years have seen a never-ending succession of menu changes – promotional campaigns, discounts and special offers.

So whilst you are in information overload, and hopefully before meltdown, here is news of more exciting food on offer....

Lunchtimes used to be a vibrant and bustling part of our day at The Walls, due largely to the excitement of a true blackboard menu with chefs scrambling up and down ladders writing up dishes as the produce arrived or wiping them off as we sold the last portion.

From the first of February there will be at least three daily specials of extraordinarily good value, freshly prepared dishes starting from £6.00 for a main course. No sample menus are available so you will just have to come and have a look.

ART EXHIBITION

From 18th February As if all this excitement wasn’t enough. Well, actually it probably is enough for the first edition of 2003, almost.

I am pleased and more than a little relieved to be able to announce a major new exhibition of the work of artist Trisha Williams-Thomas.

It has been a difficult time for Trish lately and I really hope that you will come and view and possibly purchase some of her work.

Her subject matter is varied, decorative, sometimes dramatic and always from the heart. Trish will be on hand to answer all those difficult questions that artist seem to have such fun answering on the evening of Friday 21st February.
