Welcome to the wine list! Since most of our suppliers can't keep up with the rate that our customers drink the stuff, it is inevtably out of date - we tend to change it almost daily!! Hence, we can never guarantee any particular wine will be available. However, what's listed below does give a very good idea of the overall standard and variety you can expect to find.
Restaurant wine lists are almost as contentious as tax return documents and just as confusing. In an attempt to mitigate some of this criticism, I am going to explain the philosophy behind the range and pricing of our wines.
The last 20 years has seen the most dramatic improvement in the quality of mass-market wines. The choice of affordable, quality wines, has grown rapidly and alongside this expansion. So has the knowledge and interest of wine drinkers and buyers. The class snobbery associated with wine has largely been replaced with intellectual snobbery and jargon.
There are no bad or poor wines on this list!
From the least expensive to the wallet-busting classics at around £100.00, every wine we list has had to work hard to earn its place. You will have seen and possibly drunk less expensive varieties of many of the wines we feature. However, every wine we list has earned its place because I think that, of its type and price, it represents substantial value for money.
Our house recommendations are everyday wines. They are of reasonable quality, are easy drinking and for the most part, unchallenging.
The main body of the list features wines from almost every wine-producing region of the world and reflects the strengths of these regions. Still without question the real finesse, interest and demonstration of the impact of “terroir” is most obvious in the more expensive French wines. “Terroir” is best explained or defined as the impact that the soil and microclimate have on the character of the wine. Wines made from the same grape varieties, in the same way, in the same year, can and do taste significantly different.
Other highlights in the global market are the strength and quality of the white wines from New Zealand, the Shiraz reds of Australia and the varietals from Italy. I can’t begin to tell you what an arduous and liver-numbing challenge it has been sifting through the many hundreds of wines that didn’t make it on to the list.
Suffice to say that wines, prices and vintages DO change periodically.
Happy Quaffing!
