St Oswald’s Church Organ Restoration Fund

The PCC of St. Oswald’s Church has decided to undertake a full restoration of its fine Hill organ and a small sub-group has been set up to take this forward. It was designed and built by the famous organ builder, William Hill. Hill studied under the great French organ builder Cavaille Coll and this influenced his approach to organ building. This is why the instrument is so ideal for the interpretation of romantic works while at the same time being able to produce perfect registrations for classical music. The St. Oswald’s organ is one of the finest instruments in the West Midlands and should be preserved for future generations.

Paul Hale, Organist of Southwell Minster, has been appointed consultant for the project and the following is an extract from his report.

“There is no doubt that the organ is made well, with excellent materials, constructed soundly by Hill and by Rushworth & Dreaper. However, the closer one looks at it, the more one comes to realize that it is now due for a top-to bottom overhaul.”

We will need to raise about £500,000 to carry out the restoration and the Promises Auction is one of the ways that the Restoration Appeal Committee is doing this.

If you haven’t already done so book your tickets for our Dinner and Promises Auction at The Walls Restaurant on Friday 24th October. There will be drinks on arrival, a three course dinner and live entertainment from local singer Libby Gliksman as well as the auction itself, where a wealth of amazing promises will be auctioned under the hammer of Mike Tomley.

Tickets are really excellent value at only £19.50 but are limited to the Walls’ seating capacity so book now to be sure of your table. Tickets are available from us on 01691 652257 or direct from The Walls Restaurant.

We are grateful to the many people who have given a wonderful array of promises both large and small so there will be something to suit everybody’s pocket.

What is your ideal week?

How about starting with Sunday lunch at the Walls Restaurant perhaps followed by a round of golf with 3 of your friends or fishing on a private lake or the River Dovey with a professional Ghillie. Then, during the week, a visit to the hairdresser while someone else does your ironing and mows the lawn and when you’re looking your best have your portrait painted by a well known local artist while you sip a glass of elegant champagne. Adorn your home with an original painting or perhaps an antique. If you’re going away there’s a car to take you to the airport. Finally finish everything off with dinner at Sebastian’s Restaurant.

Too good to be true? Well all the above and much more is on offer at our fund raising Promises Auction to be held at the Walls Restaurant, Welsh walls, Oswestry on Friday 24th October.
